Unveiling the Safe Havens: A Look at Irvington and Alameda’s Security Secrets
Portland, Oregon is a vibrant city with diverse neighborhoods, each offering a unique character. However, recent discussions on community websites like Nextdoor highlight concerns about petty crime and car break-ins in some areas. This begs the question: what sets safe neighborhoods like Irvington and Alameda apart?
Online marketer and web design specialist Sean H. Phillips dives into this topic, comparing the peaceful tranquility of Irvington and Alameda to the challenges faced in other areas like Sullivan’s Gulch.
After all the talk of petty crime and car break-ins in various neighborhoods reported daily on Nextdoor and other community websites I have to wonder about certain neighborhoods on how it’s possible that they show no outward signs of the problems of the rest of the areas..
I’m referring to neighborhoods like Irvington and Alameda.Maybe Fremont. But not necessarily Sullivan’s Gulch.Let’s throw in NW Portland for the purposes of this opinion.
In the last two years I’ve been walking these districts and there is no graffiti,no litter,no broken glass from the latest car break-in unlike over here in Sullivan’s Gulch that I have to walk through daily. No weird people approaching your doorstep. No homeless sleeping in whatever corner they can find or Heaven forbid a homeless person camping out on their beautiful lawns..they’d have a heart attack.
I’ve never seen a police patrol car nor a private security firm..
From my observations I can see that the majority of residents in Irvington have electronic home security systems, probably “Ring” doorbells and a dog or two.(probably the best, most cost-effective security you could have, a doggie).
Now, forgive me for saying this but it seems to me that IF was a thief or a vandal that’s the area I would hit first:
Million dollar homes and plenty of Luxury, high-end cars parked both on the street and in the driveways.
What secret power protects these neighborhoods from the majority of atrocities that are occuring in other neighborhoods?
In fact, in the last 2 years the only out of the ordinary thing I’ve seen in Irvington is an Asian lady trying to sell oranges out of a burlap sack somewhere over by Knott street I think..and 3 homeless guys passing through Irvington to get to Burnside.
Besides having a strong neighborhood association and what, some kind of political connection with Portland Police what’s their Secret Sauce?
Unfortunately, over here in Sullivan’s Gulch I can’t say the same..I see the break-ins, the homeless meandering in and out from here to Fred Meyer and that park.
Sullivan’s Gulch proximity to Broadway and Wiedler creates a very convenient area to deviate from Broadway and cross through our streets to go?? Where? To the park to huff drugs? Bust the windows out of your car?
You could say the same about Irvington and beyond,it still has quick access to Broadway, has parks, and more port-a-potties then Ive ever seen anywhere..
The Port-a-potty companies are killing it over in Irvington..I’m in the wrong business!
So, as to not go off topic here, again, I ask what is the difference between these neighborhoods now voted this year as some of the “safest” neighborhoods” to explore?
So, the easy answer would be what’s protecting those in the West Hills, Irvington and Alameda is MONEY but I think there’s more to it than being in a higher socioeconomic situation than the rest of the neighborhoods.
Because those neighborhoods don’t look any different than they did 20-30 years ago..still pristine, still beautiful, still picturesque.
Maybe the best people to answer my questions would be someone who actually lives in Irvington or Alameda or the West Hills.Maybe they can explain how they have a lower crime/incident rate than the rest of Portland?
Neighborhood watch? Security drones?Hyper vigilant, aggressive doggies?
Or, am I mistaken on that Statistic and they actually do have the same issues as the rest of the neighborhoods?
So, what’s the secret magic that these neighborhoods have that the rest of our neighborhoods don’t have?
